Solinst Drive Point Profilers

Details

The Model 660 Drive-Point Profiler is designed to be a preliminary site assessment tool enabling the collection of groundwater samples from multiple points in a single drive/drilling location, at discrete zones.

Profiler transects allow:

  • High resolution sampling
  • Detailed plume delineation
  • Depth vs. Contaminant profiling

The Profiler and attached AW rod is pushed, hammered or vibrated into place by the rig to the desired depth in suitable sands. The Profiler is stainless steel with a 45 mm (1.75”) diameter, with one row of screened inlet holes set circumferentially leading to a single LDPE or PTFE/FEP stainless steel sample line.

Sealing Profiler Holes

In most homogeneous sands, the hole will collapse as soon as the Profiler is removed. In other geologic formations it is best to use a Grout Tip Profiler. Gout Tip Profilers have single use tips which allow it to be disconnected from the Profiler by injecting grout under pressure using a grout pump after sampling is complete. This seals the hole as the Profiler is being withdrawn, to ensure no void spaces.

Depth Discrete Sampling

Profiling can either start at ground surface, or at the bottom of a predrilled hole to save time.

The Profiler system is flushed with deionised water using a Peristaltic Pump whilst being driven between sampling zones, to avoid downward drag and cross contamination. When the desired depth is reached, the pump flow is reversed, resulting in water flow to the surface. This water is then monitored for clarity and conductivity. The sample is taken when all deionised water has been removed from the system and purge parameters have stabilized.

After sampling, the water flow is reversed and once again deionised water is used to flush the Profiler tip, to keep it from clogging. If correct procedures are followed, there is virtually no drag down as tests have proven.

Sealing Profiler Holes

Drive-Point Profilers are not suitable for all sites as depth limitations vary with soil conditions and the drive technology being used. Using a peristaltic pump to flush and sample is effective if the water level in the borehole is within 8 m (26 ft.) of surface.
