3001 BioFoul Screen

Details

Solinst have produced the Model 3001 BioFoul Screen purposefully for use with the levelogger 5, Levelogger Junior 5 or the LTC Levelogger Junior to extend the time a Levelogger is deployed for before maintenance is required. When a Levelogger is deployed for extended periods in costal and saltwater environments there is and increased risk of biofouling, consequently the build up of biofoul on the pressure sensor or the conductivity cell can compromise reliability of readings. The Model 3001 BioFoul Screen is now the perfect user friendly option, consisting of a Delrin sleeve wrapped in copper wire that simply slips onto the sensor end of the Levelogger where it is held in place by friction fit. Water can still freely enter the pressure sensor of any levelogger and conductivity cell of an LTC without compromising the results.

Historically Leveloggers have and can still be cleaned by soaking them for a short amount of time in a very weak acid solution, although this is perfectly suitable for cleaning loggers it can also be time consuming, increase maintenance costs and trips to the field.

The BioFoul Screen uses natural anti-fouling characteristics of copper which reduce the unwanted buildup of microorganisms, plants, algae or organisms such as barnacles and mussels.

Operating Principles

When a Levelogger is deployed for an extended period of time, especially in coastal and seawater enviornments, there is the risk of biofouling on the Pressure Sensor and Conductivity Cell, which can affect the reliability of the measurements.

The Biofoul Screen is designed to use the natural anti-fouling characteristics of copper to reduce the unwanted buildup of microorganisms, plants, algae, or organisms such as barnacles and mussels.

Using the Biofoul Screen

  1. Loosen the Retaining Nut on the Biofoul Screen Body.
  2. Slide the Levelogger into the Biofoul Screen Body, sensor end first, until it seats in the end of the Body.

Note:

The Biofoul Screen is designed to allow water to flow freely through the Screen and the Conductivity Cell, as well as to the Pressure Sensor inlet.

  1. It is recommended to line-up the Conductivity Cell with the opening in the Biofoul Screen Body (if installing on an LTC Levelogger Junior)
  2. Hand tighten the Retaining Nut onto the body of the Levelogger. Do not over tighten.
  3. Replace the Biofoul Screen as required.

Note:

When installed, the Biofoul Screen adds approximately 3/4" (19mm) to the length of the Levelogger.
