Solinst 404 Inertial Pump

Details

The 404 Inertial Pump is a cost effective option for groundwater monitoring. It's simple and reliable inertial pump design consists of a riser tube fitted to a one-way foot valve. The inertial pump or foot valve is easy to operate at shallow depths, and it can function as a surface-pumping mechanism. The 404 inertial pump is also a simple and effective alternative to using a bailer. As with a bailer, the most important part is the check ball, located in the foot of the pump. Because of the check ball's placement, the Wat inertial pump is commonly referred to as a foot valve.

Available in several sizes, these foot valves and tubing are suitable for most well diameters and other sampling applications. A 1/4” (6 mm) Mini Inertial Pump is also available for use with CMT Multilevel Systems.

To obtain samples, the user hand-threads the foot valve onto the tubing and then lowers it to the desired depth in either a well or borehole. It is then lowered and raised approximately 6” - 12” (15 - 30 cm). Water is forced into the tubing as it moves down and is retained as the tubing is raised, which allows the water to gradually rise until it is eventually expelled above ground.

Manual use is simple, but surface-pumping mechanisms powered by electricity or gasoline are also available. Additionally, we offer Delrin Surge Blocks that fit the diameter of any foot valve or well up to 6” (150 mm). These are designed to remove fine sand and silt during well development by creating a powerful churning effect.

Riser Tubing High density polyethylene (HDPE) tubing is most frequently used. It is low cost, provides high strength and durability, and good sampling properties. Available in various sizes, the tubing comes in coils of 100, 200, or 500 ft. (30, 60, or 150 m). PTFE/FEP tubing is also available.
Footvalves Footvalves consist of a check ball inside the valve body, and are available in Delrin or stainless steel, in a variety of sizes from 3/8” to 1-1/4”(10 mm to 32 mm) diameters. Tapered threads enable the footvalve to self-tap onto either end of the riser tubing.
Pumping Mechanisms A surface pumping mechanism handles larger volumes of water and provides higher pumping rates for longer periods of time. The HydroLift II electric pump, gasoline Power Pump II, and Hand Pump Handle are available.
Flow Rates Flow rate is a function of the momentum generated in the tubing. It varies with tubing length, submergence depth of the footvalve, flexing of the tube, and the rate at which the tubing is pumped.
- Up to 7.6 L/min (2 gpm) with 5/8” x 1/2”
(16 mm x 12.5 mm) tubing
- Up to 15 L/min (4 gpm) with 1” x 5/6”
(25 mm x 21 mm) tubing
Higher volumes are obtained with the use of electric or gasoline powered surface pumping mechanisms.
